Background:
In our recent society, fresh water has been a major problem in certain parts of the world. Although all the water on the Earth eventually cycles around since mass cannot be formed or created due to the first law of thermodynamics. This means that only the structure and form of the water can be changed. In order to do this, we need to find a way to make fresh water more abundant and resourceful. Problem: As population grows, it will become harder and harder to distribute the planet’s finite resources between an ever increasing number of people. Luckily, water, the most vital and valuable of those resources is also the most plentiful. However 96.5% of all water on earth contains salt, making it undrinkable. Goal: Our goal is to purify contaminated water using synthetic biology so it is safe for all living organisms to consume and to inhabit.
